Substrate & Humidity-by-Species Calculator

Substrate looks like a shopping choice but is really a humidity decision — the right bedding for one species is wrong for another. Pick your species and enclosure footprint, and this calculator returns the recommended substrate type and depth, a target humidity range, and whether a humid hide, misting or a bioactive base is indicated — flagging the species that must stay dry. The ranges come from reputable herpetological references and manufacturer guidance. Verify for your exact animal — this is general husbandry, not veterinary advice.

Sets the humidity world your substrate has to hold — dry, moderate or humid.

The shorter floor dimension, in inches. Used to estimate substrate volume.

How this is calculated / where these numbers come from
  • Substrate type. Matched to the species' humidity needs — moisture-holding substrates for humid species, dry/non-retentive substrates for dry species. Substrate is a humidity tool first: pick the humidity target, then the substrate that helps hold it.
  • Depth. A general range. Moisture-holding substrates need enough depth to buffer humidity (and to let burrowers dig); too shallow and they dry out and stop working.
  • Target humidity range. A general husbandry range for the species, given as a band and confirmed with a hygrometer — ideally a digital probe one.
  • Misting / humid hide. Whether the enclosure wants regular misting, a localised humid hide for shedding, a bioactive base, or to be kept deliberately dry. For dry species, a humid hide localises moisture where the animal wants it without making the whole enclosure damp.
  • Volume estimate. Length × width × chosen depth, converted to a rough bag/quart estimate so you know how much to buy. Floor area only — a guide, not an exact fill.

These are general husbandry ranges drawn from reputable herpetological references and manufacturer documentation — not bench measurements of named products, and not a prescription for your specific animal. Some species must stay dry, and running a damp substrate for them is a welfare problem, so always verify the parameters for your exact species and morph. This is general husbandry information, not veterinary advice — if your animal is unwell or behaving abnormally, see a qualified reptile vet.

Once you know your substrate and humidity, the guides match the gear to them. See the best ball python substrates guide and the habitat & monitoring hub for substrate, hides and the hygrometers that confirm your range. Still sizing heat and UVB? Run the UVB + heat + enclosure-fit matcher.
